Color coding a multifunctional school campus in the heart of Vienna – Bildungscampus Sonnwendviertel.

Challenge

The city of Vienna commissioned a new type of communal education facility for children between 0 and 14 years. The “Bildungscampus Sonnwendviertel” houses a kindergarden, elementary school and middle school.

The Viennese architects PPAG designed an innovative building which is based on the idea of community and openness, allowing synergetic effects between children of all different facilities. The kids have the opportunity to live, learn and play in an open spatial environment.

Bleed was invited to create art work for the walls, which should also function as an intuitive navigation system for the whole area.

Solution

We started out with giving a clear sense of orientation by color coding the whole campus in cooperation with the architects.

The graphical concept is based on the idea of a floating stream of elements, which runs through the building like a fresh breeze of air. It connects the different areas and functions as conjunctive illustration. Quirky, abstract symbols invite the kids to interpret the meaning new every time they see them. Each wall has been worked out based on a specific theme, and the colors change depending on the location in the building.

The architects often use beautiful raw concrete walls, so we refrained from hiding them under a lot of color. Instead, our design is a rather subtle and playful scenography.

Result

We designed more than 20 walls all around the campus and used more than 200 unique drawings and symbols. To achive more patina, the graphics were applied with spray cans by the street artists from Inoperable.
