The NRK TV app is made for the Norwegian Broadcasting and makes all the programs available on pad and phone, both iOS and Android. The main concept is a stream of content, which gives the user a good chance of discovering new topics and allows to follow and subscribe to programs he likes.

The app also supports and controls live TV.

The media-house of the people

With its strong position in Norway, NRK is the media-house of the people – with a big responsibility promoting and representing diversity, and with a clear social and cultural mission. NRK TV strives to be appealing, interesting and entertaining for everyone who wishes to use their service.

Apple TV, Netflix and HBO are competitors in NRK TVs segment, offering a static "search of old movies and tv-shows" in addition to suggestions. NRK TV took a radical turn, benefitting from the advantages of its own productions and content.

Harmonising with NRKs mission to stay relevant, this is translated into the service with an updated feed of content, curated based on algorithms showcasing high-quality content. The dynamic of the feed is based on the same principles of social media feeds which results in an easy navigation through time/relevance.

Solution

Different types of content (news, movie, documentary, tv-shows etc.) and consumption (live-tv, catch-up, catalogue) are presented seamlessly. With the possibility to tag content as ‘favourites’ the user will get notified when new episodes are released. This will automatically also effect the users feed. Content that will soon expire also activates notifications to alert the user. Within its segment, this is a completely new way to solve an old problem, and the app stays relevant to the user.

The interaction principles needed to be accessible to a wide array of users. It’s possible to navigate in several ways, as some users are not comfortable with new interaction patterns and technology. This makes the service accessible for a larger crowd and enables a larger mass, compromising the spectre from beginner to advanced users. The effects of this development has been validated through a vast amount of tests and data collection.

"As a public broadcaster you have to stay relevant and be accessible to all. With the TV-app that was launched last year, NRK proves that they manage to deliver their services through electronic channels as well. The user-friendliness and personalization ingrained in the design makes using the NRK TV-app a pure pleasure."

My Favorites

"The most impressing fact might seem to be that NRK, with it’s public domain and owership, with all the pre-qualifications to become the slowest kid in class – has managed to become the leader of its segment. There’s nobody even close, not in Norway or abroad, matching the ease of use and navigation, quality of content (and variation in content) or in style. Who would have thought…"
—Aftenpostens review of NRK TV
Result
